I'm tired, so I'm going to bed in about five minutes, but I wanted to put down in the blog a bit about today.
Malachi's teacher called at 2:30 and asked if I was the one picking Malachi up. I said yes and that I was getting ready to leave. She told me that since lunch he'd been complaining about an upset stomach, and had been crying for Mommy for a while. When I got there he wasn't playing with friends, he was sitting in a chair waiting for me. I talked a bit to his teacher and we went home. Right after I'd opened his door and grabbed his backpack he said "I don't feel good" and then proceeded to puke in the backseat of the car. Throughout the rest of the afternoon and evening he puked another five times. He can't hold down anything.
We put him to bed before 8:00 after about an hour of being puke free. We brought an extra crib mattress that we have in the house into our room and put it next to our bed so he wouldn't have to walk across the house to tell us that he got sick. I came downstairs to watch T.V. and John stayed upstairs to play a video game. I heard John call out Malachi's name and go into our room and then heard silence. I knew that since I didn't hear the door close, or crying and puking it meant seizure, but since I didn't hear anything I didn't want to jump to conclusions. John made his way downstairs and told me that in fact he did have a small seizure. Not a partial, just a short grand mal. No drool, and quite short. Neither of us is very surprised really since his little body and mind have been under a ton of stress since about 3:00 today. Not only has he puked six times, but he has no nourishment because he can't keep anything down. Poor guy. Luckily he did wait long enough to puke the last time that his medicine should have been digested.
John's going to email the Neurologist in the morning and give him the details. I had already emailed his teacher and told her that he wouldn't be in school. I have a work thing tomorrow, I guess I may not be able to make it to. Of course, after a night of rest, all may be better.

Trip to the E.R. (and it's not who you thought it would be)
At 4:45 this afternoon I got Simon out of his crib so we could leave for the Super Bowl party that started at 4:30 (oops). He felt really, really hot. He had a fever this morning and we gave him Tylenol. He took an extra long nap and then afterwards felt really, really hot.
We took his temperature, under his arm, and it was 103.something which means his internal temperature was even higher. I called the nurse from the Embassy (we've talked a lot this weekend!) and she said teething doesn't usually cause such high fevers (I was thinking it's just teething because all his symptoms are the same as teething symptoms) but to try Tylenol again and to call the Dr. on his cell if it doesn't go down.
40-ish minutes later we took his temperature again and it had gone up! I couldn't get a hold of the Dr. so I left a message, and called the nurse back who recommended I take him to the E.R.
I arrived at CIMA (great private hospital about 10-15 minutes from our house, depending on traffic (up to 30 minutes) or how I drive) and brought him to the E.R. registration. I waited about two minutes, which felt like an eternity, registered, which took about twenty seconds, and was called back in another two minutes. Simon's temp and weight were taken and we were shown to a room. The Dr came in about two minutes later, asked some questions, did a quick exam and said there was swelling in his left ear and throat as well as some white plaque in his throat, diagnosis: infection. She gave me a Rx for the infection, and a pain relief spray for his throat. She also said to continue the Tylenol for pain and fever. I went to the Pharmacy, got his medicine and came home. Total time in the Hospital: approx. 30 minutes, Total Cost: approx $130. I LOVE private medical care and cost in Costa Rica.
We came home, gave him medicine and a bottle and put him in bed. He gave his kangaroo an extra big hug, and barely made a sound when I left.We'll check on him through the night to make sure he's ok, and pray the fever breaks.
I'm going to shower and go to bed.This weekend has been a bit exhausting. Tomorrow morning we'll call the Neurologist and try to get in as soon as possible.

It was lame
Last night I "led" a Bible study on Philippians 4 at my friend's church. It was lame. I didn't prepare for it well enough. I couldn't find my commentary that I did in a group project many years ago. And everyone but one person didn't show up (including my friend). We did have a good time, but I don't really feel like I taught or led anything. We got to know each other more though, and we did discuss the Lord and Phil. 3 at least. On the way home (she was my ride because we still don't have a car) she invited me and the kids over to her house for the U.S. and England game on Saturday. That'll be fun. John's going to an English pub with some friends from work.
This week my maid has been working a lot of hours because of having our HHE to unpack. She's amazing! (On an unrelated note, I'm missing my crock-pot. I wonder if we got rid of it and planned on buying a new one because I don't think I'm missing anything else from my kitchen in Dallas. It's not an emergency because of the dutch oven that Malachi (read: John) got me for Christmas. John, do you remember what we did with the crock pot?) She washed everything from my kitchen, is washing almost all the linens, and went through all of Malachi's old clothes and organized them by size, organizing Simon's closet at the same time.
Today she cleaned the bathrooms and the floors for the first time this week because I've been having her do HHE stuff. She's also been washing our laundry in the midst of it. I don't have a linens closet, so I need to figure out where to keep all of that stuff. I think I know where we should, it's just a matter of moving what's currently on that shelf to the shelf above it. I can do it!
John and I have a TON of decorations to go through. For the first few years of our marriage I collected a lot of trendy decorations that I don't really like right now. So I think we'll be getting rid of a lot. We still have to decide where all of our wall hanging things will go so the Embassy can come put them up. That service is especially nice because all of our walls are concrete. Great for Earthquakes, not great for hanging things. My calendar is still not up because of that.
Malachi went to school yesterday. He went for the whole day, for assessment, to the school we want him at this fall. I got an email from one of the directors saying that they enjoyed having him and we should hear some time this weekend about whether or not he gets in. I really, really hope so.
I went to the Embassy for Simon's 4 month well check yesterday. He weighed in at 15 1/2 pounds and 26 1/4 inches. He's a growing boy for sure! He really hated the 3rd shot, and the 4th one sent him into a total frenzy. Luckily he's pretty easy to calm down. But as soon as I put him down on the table again to dress him, he started bawling again. Poor baby. He checked out perfectly!
While I was there, I stopped in the office that I'll be working at and scheduled some training time. I won't be able to be paid for it because the government won't pay for two people in the same position, but it'll be valuable training.
I have a stomach bug thing. Hopefully we'll figure it out.

Sick Boy
Yesterday Malachi announced that his throat hurt. He was also sounding congested in his sinuses and he was coughing. Today he is acting fine, but his throat still hurts and he's still congested. John went to work this morning and I was scared about doing both boys with Malachi being sick. However, Simon was fed before John left and Malachi is watching UP, so it's not proving to be too difficult. I have to feed Simon again in an hour, we'll see how that goes.
Please pray that Simon doesn't get sick. I don't know what I would do if that happened - might make me a bit crazy.

Weirdest Cold Ever
John and I both had colds this week. Mine is still lingering a little bit but has been the shortest cold I think I've ever had. I think that the stuffy/runny nose will be gone by tomorrow morning. I hope so anyway. Even though this was one of the shortest colds I've had it's been quite painful.

Much Needed Update
If you follow John's blog you know he's been sick. He woke up on Wednesday with a temperature of 101.9. In our whole marriage I've never known him to have a fever that high. He was not very excited to miss a day of work - he's not really supposed to take leave of any kind. Luckily he has been accruing sick time. Wednesday he spent most of the day sleeping. He's never been brought down this much by anything except maybe his oral surgery. Yesterday another fever, another day off. The thing about his fever is that it was very He slept a little less but still was really down. Last night before we went to sleep I convinced him to go to Urgent Care if he had any high temp.
Today he woke up with a temp of 99.1. The lowest since the fever started, but his throat still was killing him. He emailed his boss and said he'd be out another day - starting to think that he's going to have to re-do this whole week at work another time.
The Urgent Care opened at 9 but he didn't want to go right away because he thought it would be packed. I think we left at about 10am. After dropping John off Malachi and I made our way to the library. We had a great time looking for books, and Malachi colored while I did that. Unfortunately I didn't have any proof of my residence in VA so I had to leave it all aside and go back later.
After being at a park for 5 or 10 minutes John texted to say that he was done. Malachi and I made our way back to the car and picked him up. His throat culture was positive for strep throat! No one in this family has had strep throat...well...since this family started. John and I haven't had strep since we were teens.
Malachi and I dropped off John and went to get the perscription filled and finish getting the books and videos from the library. While at the library we ran into a friend, Tiana. Her husband Nick is also in John's class, so they live near us. They however don't have a car, so I offered a ride home. She was so gracious to stay in the car with Malachi while I picked up John's medicine. I hadn't eaten much that day, so I shouldn't have gone shopping. I ended up getting a few unnecessary items. But they'll provide tasty happiness, so I don't regret it!
This afternoon John let me sleep. And I slept for a long time! Tonight we had pizza from Pizza Hut. It was tasty. This weekend we have no plans. I like it that way.

Weekend Adventures
So yesterday we got a call from John's parents saying they were on the way to the hospital. Malachi had a seizure for a couple of minutes and afterward was lethargic/sleeping for a bit. After that he woke up and cried, he was pretty scared. The EMT's, ambulance, and police were there in mere minutes (2-5), and Malachi went in the ambulance with Grandma to the hospital and Grandpa followed in the car.
He was checked out in the ER (by a Christian Dr. - Thank you Lord!). Blood work and CT Scan were normal. He was sent home from the hospital and we asked Rick and Mickey to bring him home today. Ever since he went home from the hospital he's been fine. Today he's been running around playing outside, and tonight he was running around the gym at our church while we were at a church "family dinner." He was climbing the bleachers in the gym and acting like a normal 3 1/2 year old.
The Dr. at the ER said we should take him to a Pediatric Neurologist and have an MRI done. Hopefully we can have that done as soon as possible. I'd like to be able to get in on Wednesday. It's too bad that it's a holiday on Monday, I'd like to be in earlier than that.
On a less serious note, John seems to have been poisoned by a plant. His legs have developed red, itchy spots that get pretty big and open up/scab over pretty quickly. The bumps and itchiness has spread to his arms, but he's avoiding scrathing those to make sure they don't open up. He just bought some Calahist Lotion tonight and it really helped with his dad's case, so we're hoping that it'll help with his.
Mickey's staying over tonight through Wednesday to help take care of Malachi so that my friend and I can organize the apartment. I hope that we can get a lot of work done.

Still Sick
This cold is really taking a toll on me. I haven't been able to fully train for my 5k which is on Thursday. I did finally make it to the track, but I just walked a bit over a mile.
My friend Melissa is coming over at noon to take care of Malachi. Then I'll work until 5. This way I get a bit more than five hours a day for three days this week. Friday I'm back to 8-12 because she's working that afternoon. I'm so blessed that she's going to help us out this week.
This morning I'm going to rest up before going to work.

Owie!
Cooking chili on the stove top today for the first time in a long, long time. I went to stir it and I think I tried to move the pot a bit with the spoon and then there was some splashing and I got some of the boiling hot juices on two of my fingers on my right hand. It was very painful, still is. And I was in the middle of doing dishes with Malachi and didn't get to stop. When I turned the water on for him in the shower and then checked the temperature I cried out in pain because I used my right hand and woo...it hurts!
I've asked John if he could finish the dishes. I didn't get an answer, but hopefully with my gimp hand and most of them already done he'll be willing to do it for me.
Tomorrow he's coming home early because I have to go to the Dr.'s office. This has nothing to do with Department of State, but rather an infection that apparently hasn't gone away with meds, but gotten worse. It's become painful and I just want it to go away. So for the first time (yes, another) in a long time I'm going to the Dr. for a reason not related to "women health" or the DoS.
I really like my Dr.'s medical assistant. She is so available to her patients. She gives out her email address and extention to patients in case they need to get a hold of her and she's been very patient with me during the whole medical clearance process. Thank you Sarah!

Sick :(
John had a cold last week that we thought may delay our date. It didn't because John was better by Friday. The date was great! He did get me a present, a new phone woohoo!
Three out of four of the sushi rolls were really good, we'll definitely be going back there again. The play was very funny, there were a few times where I laughed so loud someone from the cast looked at me.
I woke up yesterday with John's cold, so did Malachi in fact. This morning my temperature was 100.8. I hope it burns away the cold! My ears and head hurt. It's too bad because I don't think I can rest very easily. Also I'm still having back problems. I think there's a knot in my back on the left side but John couldn't find it yesterday when he was massaging.
We're not going to church today, I'm sure we'll just laze around the house. Hopefully I'll be better by tomorrow so I can work. I went to the gym on Friday morning, but haven't been back since. I'm trying to do well in the eating department since I'm not exercising.
I just found out that Malachi has a temperature of 99.9. That means we wont be going to school/work tomorrow. He has to be fever free for 24 hours before he can go to school. I think I hear John cutting up fruit. We went to Central Market yesterday to buy some get healthy food. I love fruit so much, I can't wait!
